Netflix : Donnie Darko

Hi all ! :)
I have recently been switched from part time to full time at work, so if my posts seem more sparatic this is why.
I wanted to do this for awhile now and I finally told myself to just do it...I am going to do reviews about movies on Netflix!...whether or not you should waste your time watching them or not. They will be a short summary of the movie (just to captivate you enough to watch it or not ;) ) and these reviews will (obviously) contain spoilers, so if you don't want to know what happens...then just watch the movie.
The first movie I decided to review was Donnie Darko. This movie came out in 2001 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal. The first thing I have to say about this movie is that I have a new respect for Jake Gyllenhaal's acting. He does an amazing job portraying a kid who is pretty much losing his mind...or so you think. This movie is definitely a psychological thriller kind of movie, I was pretty much confused the whole entire movie...even when the movie was over I had to go online and look up exactly what everything meant ....and honestly, I am still pretty confused. Aside from that though I would definitely recommend this movie...it's a great movie that makes you question what is really going on and it has lots of twists.
In saying all this the jist of this movie is about time travel. From what I read on the internet about the movie, an airplane jet engine that is supposed to land on Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) while he is asleep in his room,  is thrown into some kind of time warp. Because the plane engine messes up something in the timeline, Donnie is in charge of fixing it...but he does not know it. Some creepy rabbit thing (as pictured) leads Donnie on this "alternate reality" in order to fix the time continuum, if you will.

Donnie has a past of pyromania and is known as a "troubled" kid. So this bunny thing (which is actually a kid in a costume for Halloween lol, I thought it was just really cheap monster costume at first) tells Donnie to kill people and to burn a house down and all this mess, and Donnie falls in love with the new girl and town...blah blah. A lot of strange stuff happens and eventually you think he is just losing his mind, and that thought is later "confirmed" by his therapist who tells Donnie's parents that he is a schizo...BUT he's not. On Halloween night, Donnie's girlfriend and him (and two friends) go to this place to figure out what is going on and Donnie's girlfriend ends up being ran over ...by who you may ask? ...by the kid in the rabbit suit! BUT, it is not in his mind..it is the actual kid...and in a fit of love...Donnie reaches for a gun ( that he miraculously pulled out of his pants with no warning) and shoots the guy in the eye...and therefore killing him which in turn allows the guy in the bunny suit to be Donnie's so called..."spirit guide" in this alternate reality.. I know..I know...it just blows your mind lol. Anyways...lol...Donnie ends up fixing the timeline thing with what I read was telekinetic powers...but in the movie it nowhere says anything about that so I am not sure how accurate that is. This then reverses time and after a long montage of everything we just seen backwards...we end up with Donnie back in his room on the night that everything started... everything is playing out...and you realize what is going on and before you know it ...Donnie is squished by the plane engine from the beginning.
It is a crazy confusing and awesome movie, ahhah. I know you are probably thinking that I just explained that pretty bad...but I assure you I did not explain it as bad as you think, lol.
I give this movie five stars ( out of five) and I would totally recommend it to anyone who is interested in that kind of genre of movie.
I hope you enjoyed this review! :)
Until next time!

  1. I LOVE Donnie Darko! I agree with everything you said. I think I watched it about 5 times before I finally started to understand it! It's one of those movies where you have to watch it multiple times, because there are a lot of things you don't catch the first time around! Netflix is my life! HAHA. If you haven't seen Girl Interrupted you need to watch that ASAP. Also, if you're into weird, interesting, indie type of movies I also suggest Lars & The Real Girl, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys & How to Die in Oregon(this one is super hard to watch, so pick a day where you're pretty calm LOL)
